Episode 2: About My Husband-to-Be
Summary
Lord Kudo is domineering in their first meeting, instructing Miyo to obey him “no matter what.” He states if he asks her to leave, she is to leave. No discussions. Miyo immediately agrees and humbly asks if there are any other rules she needs to know. This catches Lord Kudo off guard. After the cold reception, Yurie takes Miyo to her room. It is more luxurious than the servant room she had at her own home.

As Miyo lies down for bed, she divulges that her family members possess supernatural gifts. However, Miyo does not. Her sister Kaya possesses spirit sight, which is important in this world. Spirits in this world are called Grotesqueries and Kaya can sense them. This elevates Kaya to the most important daughter in the family. As time passes, Miyo realizes that she is unwanted.
When Miyo awakens, she decides to make herself useful to Lord Kudo. She decides that she is going to make breakfast. Yurie arrives and is surprised to see Miyo making breakfast. Yurie is grateful to Miyo. As Miyo serves Lord Kudo breakfast, he instructs her to sit beside him. He asks her to take a bite. When she hesitates, he accuses her of trying to poison him. Miyo is shocked, and the incident further degrades her self-confidence.

We are then taken to Lord Kudo’s workplace, where he trains the Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit. Here, soldiers of sorts hone their supernatural abilities. Some are able to use telekinesis, pyrokinesis, or clairvoyance. In his office, Lord Kudo recounts the events of the morning. Yurie defended Miyo and said she wasn’t the type that would try to poison him.
When Lord Kudo returns from work, Miyo greets him and apologizes, stating that she didn’t think things through before assuming she could cook for him. She lets him know that Yurie prepared the meal without her help. Still bolstering a cold attitude toward Miyo, he admonishes her for apologizing too much. When she tries to offer to prepare his bath, he turns down her offer because he has abilities to manipulate fire. This makes Miyo feel even more useless.
After his bath, he approaches Miyo and apologizes for his actions. He then tells her that Yurie is coming in late and that he is counting on Miyo to prepare breakfast. This makes Miyo extremely happy.
Miyo has another dream. This time, she recalls how her deceased mother’s momentos have disappeared. She is locked in a storeroom in the dark when she confronts her stepmother. Her father did not come to her aid. She recalls a servant that pleaded to not lock Miyo in the storeroom. Her name was Hana and she was immediately fired.

The next morning, Miyo begins breakfast preparations, but to her surprise, Yurie shows up at her normal time. It is discovered that Lord Kudo might have told a white lie to make it up to Miyo. Miyo is comforted when Lord Kudo praises her food. She cries because it has been so long since she received a compliment.
Yurie tells Lord Kudo about her observations. Miyo is sickly and thin. Her kimono is basically ragged. There is nothing about Miyo that says she is from a prominent family. Lord Kudo decides that he will investigate.
At Miyo’s old household, her father is on a phone call with someone that claims he has a right to Miyo. The episode ends with the disclosure that Miyo has “Usuba” blood.
Thoughts
I feel sorry for Miyo. It is cruel that her family locked her in a storeroom to teach her a lesson. She must have been terrified. What makes matters worse is they fired her one ally in that home. The episode builds Yurie is so kind and loving. I am glad that Miyo has another ally. So far, Yurie has defended her and made arguments on her behalf. I am worried that Lord Kudo is controlling. I hope it is just an act to weed through those who want him for his money and power. The show makes it obvious that Lord Kudo is a force to be reckoned with. I am glad that he gave Miyo another chance to make breakfast. It was a real a-hole move to accuse her of poisoning his meal. The storyline harps on this “Usuba” blood, making me think it will become important later. Looking forward to the next episode!
