Episode 4: The Gift

Summary

The episode begins with another of Miyo’s dreams. We are introduced to the beginnings of indifference towards Miyo due to her lack of supernatural power. Miyo’s mother runs to Shinichi, Miyo’s father, to beg that he not abandon their daughter, but he makes it clear that he has already abandoned her and is unable to love her.

Waking up from her dream, Miyo gets ready for the day and asks Yurie what she could gift to Lord Kudo. Yurie finds a handicraft book and gives it to Miyo so she can make Lord Kudo a gift. She decides to make Lord Kudo a braided cord for his hair. She asks Lord Kudo for his permission to leave the house which he grants. He gifts her an amulet with instructions to never leave the house without it.

Yurie and Miyo head to a craft shop to browse the different materials. Miyo settled on the color purple for the braided cord.

Miyo is waiting in town for Yurie to finish an errand and runs into Kaya. Immediately, Miyo succumbs to the fear of past trauma created by Kaya. Kaya is cruel and assumes that her sister has been thrown onto the streets or a servant to Lord Kudo.

Yurie comes to Miyo’s rescue and quickly corrects Kaya that Miyo is going to marry Lord Kudo.

While Yurie and Miyo are in town, Lord Kudo pays a visit to Miyo’s father and stepmother. He reinforces that he plans to marry Miyo. Lord Kudo makes it clear that in order for their families to be in harmony, Shinichi must apologize to Miyo for the abuse.

Back at the house, Miyo’s self-doubt and deprecation are going full speed.

Kaya returns home to pass by Lord Kudo as he is walking out of the compound. Not realizing who he is, she becomes enamored by his good looks.

Yurie explains to Lord Kudo what happened in town and how Miyo acted terrified of her younger sister. Wanting to comfort her, Kudo tells Miyo that she doesn’t have to bear it alone.

Miyo finishes the braided cord but does not have the courage to give it to him. As she contemplates it, a guest visits. It is none other than Hana, the one servant that defended and cared for Miyo. Miyo finds out that Lord Kudo wrote a letter and summoned Hana to make Miyo happy. Miyo is able to open up to Hana and Hana gives her the courage to gift the braided cord to Lord Kudo.

Miyo rushes to Lord Kudo and comes clean about not possessing supernatural abilities. She confirms that she was a servant in her own home. She then thanks Lord Kudo for everything he has done and presents the braided cord. Kudo goes to her and tells her has every intention of announcing their engagement as soon as possible. He hugs her and tells her he wants no one else. He then asks her to tie his hair in the braided cord.

Everything is going well with Miyo and Kudo and that makes Koji’s father very upset as he was originally supposed to have possession of Miyo.

Thoughts

I like where this show is going. It appears there is a battle looming in the distance. At the end of the episode, we’re shown the anger of Koji’s father. How far will he go to get his hands on Miyo? I love how Kudo is softening up toward Miyo. She is opening up his heart and he is opening up her heart. It’s sweet. Her idea for a gift is also really sweet. Gifts do not need to cost a lot of money to be meaningful. I am a bit miffed at Koji. The guy has no backbone. He claims to love Miyo, but he stood there and allowed Kaya to berate Miyo in public. I, for one, am glad that he didn’t end up with Miyo. He would not have been able to protect her at all.
