Summary

A famine has hit. Iemitsu surveys the land. She sees that her people are suffering. On a trip to Edo, Iemitsu discovers the true nature of the lands beyond the Ooku. She discovers that men are rented out like prostitutes at high rates. In the red light district, she is made aware of the lengths women are going to have children.

After returning from Edo, Iemitsu calls for the representatives to gather. She fears a peasant uprising. Iemitsu proposes that a shed be built in the middle of town. She wants to feed the peasants rice porridge for seven days. Her plan is scoffed at, but she quickly tells the representatives the gesture is not to save the peasants but rather to quell their thirst for an uprising.

Gyokuei and Iemitsu meet for their time together. She finds Gyokuei interesting. Arikoto and Iemitsu are talking and he tells her of a time a fortune teller told a young Gyokuei that he would be the father of a powerful ruler.

In an event to show loyalty to the shogunate, it is obvious to many that women are posing as men. One of the representatives suggested allowing women to become successors temporarily. Lady Kasuga is disgusted. She implies that it is beneath a samurai family. However, the representatives make it clear. Not allowing women to become successors to feudal lords might be a threat.

Lady Kasuga is, in her mind, assaulted by Arikoto’s decision to celebrate a chrysanthemum viewing. Arikoto explains that no money or supplies were wasted and that the men deserve something to look forward to. It was this one gesture that changed the Ooku forever. In her anger, Lady Kasuga falls over.

Thoughts

The groundwork for the future of Ooku is continuing to be built. The famine has laid the building blocks for an uprising. Iemitsu senses the turbulent times and is showing her prowess as a leader. It is about time that everyone is swaying away from the advice of Lady Kasuga. Her old way of thinking is potentially putting the shogunate in danger. The representatives and even Arikoto are rebelling. I am interested in seeing where this newfound thinking leads the shogunate. How are Iemitsu and Arikoto going to be move forward? Will Gyokuei produce the male heir?
