Summary
Lady Kasuga has become bedridden. Kasuga is given an attendant, but she is also Chiyo’s wet nurse. Arikoto takes it upon himself to tend to Kasuga. Iemitsu is upset that Kasuga won’t take any medication to aid her illness.

While caring for Kasuga, it is brought to Arikoto’s attention that the red-faced smallpox has made it into the Ooku. He quickly goes into action ordering that the sick be brought to Kasuga’s room so that he alone can care for them. When the servant makes the point that Iemitsu would not allow it, he tells the servant to lie. He then states that he has outlived his usefulness in the Ooku and that it is okay if he dies. One of the infected is the father of Chiyo.

Iemitsu is told that Kasuga is taking her medications. However, Arikoto finds the packages hidden underneath her futon. She asks Arikoto to not tell Iemitsu. The smallpox ravages the country. At this point, there is only one man to every five women.
Kasuga summons her son and Arikoto. She requests that her son continue to chronicle the happenings of the Ooku and that Arikoto take her place to care for Iemitsu and the Ooku. That night, Kasuga passes away.
With no other choice, Iemitsu is introduced as the first female shogun.

Thoughts
It finally comes together. The red-faced smallpox finally reaches the Ooku. At this point, they have no other choice but to unveil the new future. I had mixed feelings about Kasuga’s passing. On one hand, she was a hardass, but on the other hand, she was only doing what she thought needed to be done. There is only one more episode. I wonder if we’re going to fast-forward to “current” times.
