EPISODE 12: MY FIRST LOVE
After their first kiss, Hotaru and Hananoi are waiting for the train together. While waiting, Hotaru can’t keep her eyes open and falls asleep. Hananoi ponders how his past self would react to the thought of them falling in love.
Back in the past, Hananoi is sitting on the bench with this older gentleman that he befriended. The “grandpa” notices that he keeps staring at a girl that looks much like a young Hotaru. He admits to the old man that she picked something up for him the prior day. At school, he finds himself thinking about the young Hotaru.
Hananoi is given an assignment to fill out to give to three people he wants to stay in contact with. However, he doesn’t have any friends. He goes to the park and makes a paper airplane out of it and throws it. The young Hotaru picks up his plane and asks if it belongs to him. She notices the assignment and says they must go to the same school. She points out that the old man isn’t with him.

Hananoi admits that he doesn’t have anyone to switch cards with, so she offers to switch cards with him. When he says that he didn’t fills his out yet, Hotaru tells him to fill it out later and give it to her at school. All night, he stares at the paper.

Unfortunately, Hananoi can’t find the courage to find her and give her his card. Then, one day, he sees Yao giving Hotaru a hug. Noticing her shoes were in her cubby, he gets the courage to go to the classroom and find her. He gets to the classroom and witnesses Hotaru’s friend cutting her hair.

He goes to the park and finds the old man. He begins to cry because he didn’t do anything to help Hotaru. Instead, he left her crying. Hananoi feels like he should have never starting liking her. However, the old man tells him that it isn’t right to say that. Everyone deserves to fall in love.
Back to the present, the train is arriving. He tells Hotaru that he’s happy. He reminisces about the old man and realizes that he never asks him what comes after falling in love.
Hotaru and Hanonoi are on a movie date and she can’t contain her happiness. While going around the mall, they end up at a jewelry store. The clerk convinces Hotaru to put on a couple’s ring. Hotaru has a conversation with the clerk telling her it may be too soon for her and Hananoi, but the clerk tells her it is a good thing to celebrate your feelings. Hananoi wants to buy her the ring, but it is way too expensive and she runs him away from the store. Instead, she finds a cheaper store and tells Hananoi they could buy each other one from there.

As they express their feelings together, they embrace in another kiss.

THOUGHTS
What a cute show! We are finally let in on the secret that caused Hananoi to be so desperate in his love for Hotaru. He longed for her in elementary school and suddenly runs into her in high school. It’s amazing how much he grew from the scared young boy to the boy that asked her out the very next day! Also, bless that old man for taking the young Hananoi under his wing. Hananoi’s parent obviously were not up to the job. Let’s talk about his shit parents. I’m sorry, but if you abandon your own flesh and blood to help others, you’re not as much of a saint as you’re trying to be. His parents infuriate me. They’re also shit children dumping their kid on their mother like that. If your “calling” is to travel and help people in dire situations, they should not have had a child. How heartbreaking it must have been to always receive pictures of them with other children. No child should have to be subjected to that. Shout out to Grandma for raising him.
I hope you enjoyed this show with me and if you haven’t watched it yet, I suggest you do! It’s a sweet love story and I hope, in my heart, they make it the long haul!
