EPISODE 1: AN APPLIANCE BECAME MY WIFE
Takuma is a salaryman that works hard and late into the night. At home, his robot prepares dinner. We learn that he has been living alone for three years. He had a prior relationship that didn’t last. Since he doesn’t have time to do chores, he has a household robot that he bought secondhand.
FULL STOP.
I did watch the whole episode, but it did not warrant a full write-up. There is so much wrong with this show that I couldn’t bear to actually do my normal summary. In order to actually watch this show and find some good nature, you have to overlook some major red flags.
Takuma enjoys his alcohol a little too much. Whether it is loneliness or depression, the show doesn’t hold back that Takuma likes to drink. In one scene, he drowns his emotions in beer to the point that Mina, his robot, disposes of the rest of the beer and makes him down equal parts water.
Mina is a literal robot. Takuma has emotionally attached to a household appliance, and he KNOWS it. Yet, he doesn’t have the capacity to think of the relationship logically. Instead of seeing Mina as a robot, he sees her as a person. In my mind, he’s not mentally stable.
The robot starts to take on human-like behavior. In multiple scenes, Mina’s actions could be seen as human-like actions. I feel like giving the robot human-like actions is baiting the interactions between Mina and Takuma. Would a robot really pour beer down the sink? I don’t think so. She lied to him and said they were out of beer. Would a robot lie?
This show might redeem itself in the end. Maybe it is about his journey to fix his loneliness in healthy ways. Maybe he grows to be a better person. Who knows? I won’t know because I won’t be continuing this show. The premise really creeps me out and no amount of redemption is going to lure me in. But, like. That’s just my opinion, man.
