Chapter 12: Flipped Upside Down
Embraced by Yamato, Kakeru doesn’t know what to do. Instead of pushing him away, Kakeru whispers that someone might see them. Then, Kakeru’s phone starts ringing. Kakeru’s sister finds them and Kakeru mentions to his sister that he ran into Akane and then Yamato. Yamato then apologizes for getting the wrong idea. The next day at school, Yamato isn’t acting any different. However, Kakeru is greatly affected. The hug doesn’t leave his mind. What is it supposed to mean and why does it not mean anything to Yamato? Kakeru invites Yamato to lunch. Unfortunately, Kakeru doesn’t have the courage to bring up the hug. Instead, he asks Yamato where he wants to go on the school trip to Kyoto. Yamato admits there is a tourist spot that he wants to go to. They decide they will go together on their third free day. Both Yamato and Kakeru think that maybe they’re going on a date by going to the tourist spot together alone.

Chapter 13: School Trip Memories (Part 1)
The boys have made it to Kyoto and are making memories. Back at school, Mikoto is wondering if Kakeru and Yamato made it to Kyoto okay. At one of the shrines, there is a rumor that if you give one of their charms to someone on the trip and they accept it, love will bloom. One of Kakeru’s friends teases Yamato for looking interested in them. At the inn, it’s time for the boys to take a bath. However, Kakeru is all of a sudden shy and avoids bathing with Yamato. As he is in the hallway, a girl approaches Kakeru with a charm for Yamato.

Chapter 14: School Trip Memories (Part 2)
It’s nighttime and the boys are breaking the rules by playing video games. One of the boys comes rushing back to tell the others that the teacher is on the way. They quickly scamper to hide everything and get into their futons. However, Kakeru jumps into Yamato’s futon and he lays on top of Yamato. The teacher leaves and the others tease Yamato and Kakeru. The next day, Kakeru and Yamato look like they didn’t sleep well. One of Kakeru’s friends notices and has a conversation with him. Kakeru’s friend gives him vague advice about maintaining the status quo for the sake of things not changing. Kakeru decides he has to have a proper conversation with Yamato.

Chapter 15: School Trip Memories (Part 3)
Kakeru, Yamato, and one of their friends are at a cafe. The friend asks them to come with him. While waiting, Kakeru remembers the charm that the girl classmate gave him. He tries to give to Yamato, but Yamato loses his temper and yells at Kakeru to give it back. The friend interrupts them and introduces the girls from the mixer to include Akane. The friend pulls Yamato aside and asks if he could give up his time with Kakeru so he could spend it with Akane. Surprisingly, Yamato agrees and goes on his way.

Chapter 16: School Trip Memories (Part 4)
In a turn of events, Kakeru spends time with Akane, but can’t seem to focus. He keeps thinking about his cancelled plans with Yamato. Specifically, whether or not the plans actually meant anything to Yamato. Akane senses that Kakeru’s mind is somewhere else. Kakeru has found Yamato’s guide with all the places he wanted Kakeru to see. She suggests that he should remedy what’s bothering him. He apologizes to Akane and runs to find Yamato leaving behind a broken-hearted Akane.

Chapter 17: School Trip Memories (Part 5)
As Yamato is alone reflecting on his feelings for Kakeru and wondering why his heart hurts so much, he hears Kakeru call his name. As it starts to rain, Yamato reaches for Kakeru and kisses him. Yamato admits his feelings right before he passes out in Kakeru’s arms.

THOUGHTS

How frustrating. Yamato is really stuck between a rock and a hard place. It must be difficult to be in love with your best friend. Even more difficult when you don’t know whether or not that friend could reciprocate those feelings because you are both male. I can completely understand why Yamato doesn’t want to rock the boat. It’s scary to think about losing the person closest to you. I can also relate to his feelings of self-sacrifice. I think if I were in that same situation, I wouldn’t have the courage to speak up, either.
