Thought I would take a minute to gather my thoughts on our trip to Japan in 2027. We are still aiming for the end of March-beginning of April to hopefully catch sakura season. We are planning on a week stay. Maybe longer if we can swing it.

Flights. We plan on booking the trip a year ahead of time. This is mostly because we want to fly premium economy to get slightly more room. Those seats are very limited. We want to make sure that we don’t miss out on those. I’ve been watching flights for the past couple of years. Unless you plan on going last-minute, it is almost always cheaper to book as far in advance as you can. Ticket prices just keep going up. I remember originally looking at tickets years ago, and they were $1,500 a person. Now, they’re roughly $3,000 a person. Again, we’re booking premium economy. I am sure regular economy is much cheaper, but my husband is 6’5″ and he can use all of the extra legroom we can afford.

Entertainment. There are so many places that we want to visit in Tokyo.

  • The Making of Harry Potter
  • Maid Cafe
  • Skytree
  • TeamLabs: Borderless
  • Shibuya Crossing
  • Pokemon Center in Shibuya
  • Senso-ji Temple
  • Yoyogi Park
  • Sumo Wrestling
  • Harajuku
  • Akihabara

I am sure that I missed a ton of places we want to go, but that is a simple list.

Traveling outside of Tokyo. We have one trip that we want to do that will bring us outside of Tokyo. There is a tour for Hakone that we want to do. You drive by bus and return by bullet train. You are supposed to be able to get a good view of Mt. Fuji on a clear day. That way, we knock two birds with one stone. A trip on a bullet train AND a view of Mt. Fuji.

Budget. This is a very SPARSE budget. And probably highly inaccurate. I am trying to overbudget so we don’t have to worry about money, but I have a feeling I am still under budgeting.

DescriptionUnit Cost Per PersonTotal
Flights$3,000$6,000
Trains$150 $300
Food$300$600
Hotel$375$2,250
Harry Potter$100$200
Made Café$50$100
Skytree$35$70
TeamLabs$50$100
Hakone Tour$200$400
Souvenirs$500$1,000
Animal Café$35$70

Total: $11,050.00

I know we can save on hotel, but we found a specific hotel that is right above Shibuya station. The airport limo also drops off directly at this specific hotel. It also overlooks the Scramble and that seems pretty darn cool. I also know I overbudgeted for souvenirs. I’d rather have more money to spend than not. Or we might totally blow that budget. I know I probably overbudgeted for transportation.

What do you think? Do you think I have a realistic budget? What would you suggest I add? Any places you think we need to visit?
