EPISODE 1: LLOYD IS CAST OUT

Lloyd, our protagonist, is learning magic from his teacher. She’s tough.

She often gives him no instruction, but rather shows him and expects him to produce results. However, this method seems to work for Lloyd. He quickly grasps the concept, but lacks power. The teacher is quick to deflate any ego he might build. Despite putting him through the ringer, Lloyd enjoys learning and vows to keep working harder.

One day, his teacher is hungover and not feeling well. Using healing magic, he is able to make her feel better. In a touching moment, his teacher hugs him and thanks him for the heal.

This moment doesn’t last long. She quickly recovers and immediately drags Lloyd to training. That evening, his teacher is looking at a book with disgust in her face. Lloyd knocks at the door to let her know dinner is ready. She drops the book by accident. When Lloyd picks up the book, something happens.

Lloyd passes out. His teacher mentions he has the ability to become a chosen one.

Lloyd’s teacher explains what a white mage is. Someone who uses helpful magic for the good of others.

His teacher continues to put him through hell. She hands him a knife, dumps him in the middle of nowhere and gives him a week to find his way back home. During that week, he learns to enhance his spells to run away from the monsters. He makes it home.

More time passes, and Lloyd is now adventuring age. One day, his teacher wakes up and Lloyd isn’t there. Lloyd ventured to the nearest city where he manages to become a white mage in the hero’s party. However, the hero’s party treats him poorly.

Lloyd’s teacher is visited by a friend name Will who tells her that Lloyd was hired by the hero’s party. We get a little backstory about a demon lord sacrificing himself to steal her grimoire. In the process, killing everyone. However, Sybil, one of their party members, used ancient magic to save everyone at the cost of Sybil’s life.

Meanwhile, the hero’s party is doing well. The party is starting to notice little differences like their shields being lighter, or feeling stronger.

The guards come to the hero’s party regarding golems killing soldiers. Using Lloyd’s magic, they are able to find the source of the golems. There, they find a cave where a magician is using a magistone to produce golems. Lloyd takes command making Allen, the hero, upset. When they’re done, Allen kicks him out of the party.

Lloyd is having trouble finding a party. As he is about to give up, a young girl is at the guild desk demanding a free white mage. That is when the guild worker sees Lloyd and points him out. She quickly asks him if he is free (with a party).

She grabs his hand and runs out of the guild with him.

THOUGHTS

I am not sure how I feel about this one. Half the episode was the teacher putting Lloyd through hell, and it got boring pretty quick. There is obviously a back story with the teacher. We get a little piece of it, but I am sure there is more. Let me rephrase that. There SHOULD be more.

The show is pretty formulaic. I don’t usually have a problem with that, but so far, this show hasn’t offered up anything to set it apart.

I’ll give it another episode or two, but I don’t have high hopes for this one.
