ISEKAI OFFICE WORKER: THE OTHER WORLD’S BOOKS DEPEND ON THE BEAN COUNTER
Episode 1: I Got a Job

Genre: Boys Love, Romance, Isekai

I was SO excited when I saw this title on this season’s anime list. I have actually read all of the light novels and love this series. That being said, I didn’t know how they would be able to translate the spicy light novels into an anime people could safely watch, because, yeah. Very spicy.

Kondou Seiichirou is an overworked office worker in modern day Japan. While walking home contemplating his life, he hears a girl scream for help in a dark alley. He goes to save her only to be sucked into a portal to another world.

When he awakes, he is in the Romany Kingdom. He learns that the Romany Kingdom used all of their knowledge to summon the Holy Maiden. He further learns that there is a “demon forest” that exudes miasma. The Holy Maiden is summoned to purify the forest.

Kondou was just collateral damage. To make amends for the mistake, the Kingdom tells Kondou that they will pay his living expenses and allow him to live out his days in comfort. They ask him if there is anything else he needs, and to that, he replies he wants a job. With his prior corporate experience, they assign him to the Royal Accounting Department.

After a nap, Kondou meets Norbert Blanc, a co-worker from the accounting department. He brings him clothes and math books. Norbert is a positive, extra-energetic man.

The next day, Kondou is waiting for Helmut (his boss) outside when he is approached by someone.

He recognizes him from the summoning ceremony. Rushing to Kondou’s side, Norbert is surprised that the only and only Commander Indolark is interrogating Kondou. Once Norbert shows up, Commander Indolark releases an irritated breath and walks away. Norbert explains that Commander Indolark is a young prodigy that commands the Third Royal Order, a unit full of elite knights that can wield magic and swords.

When they arrive at the accounting department, Kondou immediately learns that they really don’t work. They have tea, take breaks, and then leave right when the day ends. Definitely different from his corporate slave life.

Norbert takes him to town to gather supplies. There, he sees a boy selling a contraption that looks like an abacus and purchases one. He also grabs a quill that doesn’t run out of ink.

The next day, Kondou arrived early at work before everyone else to clean up the office. His co-workers are shocked. Kondou’s work ethic is a bit TOO good. Norbert asks Kondou if he slept all right. The dark bags under his eyes worries Norbert. Kondou explains that as you age, fatigue isn’t as easy to chase away. Norbert then gives Kondou a nutritional tonic meant to help ease fatigue.

Kondou is summoned to meet with the Holy Maiden. There, he meets the first prince.

The first prince is summoned away, and Commander Indolark is asked to keep an eye on him. The Holy Maiden introduces herself as Shiraishi Yua. Kondou tries to give the Shiraishi advice about really thinking about the danger she will be put in if she accepts the role of Holy Maiden. This angers the Shiraishi and she storms out.

The next day, Kondou wakes up refreshed from the tonic. He asks Norbert to take him to the medicine shop after work to buy more. While at the medicine shop, Commander Indolark and Vice Commander Rhoda show up. The Vice Commander sneers at the two calling the accounting department the “funnel” department. Avoiding further snide comments, Kondou excuses himself, but as he passes by, Indolark gives him a warning:

Back at work, Kondou discovers discrepancies in the accounting. When brought to Helmut’s attention, he is met with resistance and excuses. Apparently, the accounting department was truly a funneling department that just blindly processed documents.

Kondou immediately goes into action. He takes the lead and says they would start sending back budget requests without proper receipts and explanations. Kondou begins to investigate where the money is coming from. He soon discovers that shortfalls were being taken from the demon forest countermeasures fund of the defense budget. If the funneling continues, it will ruin the Kingdom.

Helmut was called into a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss Kondou’s financial discoveries. Meanwhile, the Vice Commander is arguing with Kondou about the Royal Order’s rejected budget requests. The Vice Commander insists that he speak to someone with more authority. The Prime Minister comes around the corner and gives Kondou the authority he needs to be listened to.

After his appointment to the assistant director, Kondou realizes that he is out of potions. He makes his way back to the store and goes into the alley to drink the potion. He is suddenly hit with a sick feeling.

Commander Indolark comes around the corner and discovers a struggling Kondou.

THOUGHTS

Hmm. Where to start.

First, let me reiterate that I’ve read the light novels, so it might be hard for me to be completely unbiased.

That being said, the first episode was pretty boring, but also pretty true to the source material. It was your typical world building episode that is necessary to lay the groundwork for the remaining story. I fear most people will not make it past the first episode because of this. But, I hope you’ll try to at least give it the three episode test.

The next episode should have a little more…action. Will continue to monitor.
