EPISODE 6: EX-BOYFRIEND???
Eating ramen together, Shirosaki tries to sprinkle toothpicks into his ramen. Then Momose has a nightmare about his old boss. In his kitchen, Shirosaki examines a bar of chocolate given to him by a client. Shirosaki decides he is going to get Momose’s opinion on it. Momose is still having trouble getting over the trauma of his last boss. When Kinjo asks Momose if something happened between Momose and Shirosaki, Momose recalls this ex-boss telling him that he leaves him unread on purpose because he is annoying him. Shirosaki has left Momose’s messages unread.
As Momose goes down the negative rabbit hole of why Shirosaki is not reading his text messages, Kinjo takes action and texts Shirosaki. However, they both hear the notification sound coming from the fridge. There in the fridge is Shirosaki’s phone. Kinjo and Momose try to come up with reasons the phone is the fridge. Shirosaki walks up and asks Momose if something is wrong. Momose points out Shirosaki’s phone and Shirosaki pulls the chocolate bar out of his chest pocket instead of a smartphone.
The following day, Kinjo and Momose go to lunch together. As they’re browsing “Enstagram,” Momose notices he posts a lot of people. When he asks, Kinjo says they are a lot of people he met at bars. Then he gets to photos of his ex-girlfriends and asks if he should delete them. Then, out of left field, he casually references a photo of his ex-boyfriend.
Then, the conversation takes another turn when a picture of Kinjo and his abusive boss comes up. Kinjo tells his story while Momose listens. Kinjo tells Momose that it got to a point that he thought he was always going to get hit. Then, he met Momose and Shirosaki and decided to quit. He told his abusive boss the truth why he was quitting and the abusive boss stayed silent. Kinjo hopes the experience turned his abusive boss more empathetic to his subordinates. Just then, Shirosaki and Aoyama show up. Kinjo asks to take a picture to post to Enstagram.
The first like is Kinjo’s abusive boss.
Back at work, Shirosaki and Momose are presenting their proposals to the aquarium. Despite liking both the proposals, the aquarium wanted something that appeals to both children and adults. On the spot, Momose thinks an age-appropriate quiz would be appealing to all ages. Shirosaki praises Momose after the meeting. Upon looking at some of the children, an adult yells at the kids and it triggers Momose. As he is about to send a text to the office to let them know they are on their way home, the adult yells again causing Momose to drop his phone in the fountain.
Shirosaki goes with Momose to get a new phone. Shirosaki asks Momose what is bothering him. Momose tries to brush it off so Shirosaki won’t think he is pathetic for still being traumatized. Momose notices that Kinjo is doing his best to move on and Momose wishes he could do the same. Shirosaki and Momose are leaving work when Momose gets a call. It’s from his former boss.
Momose realizes that his former boss must have been calling the entire time after he resigned because he blocked his number. Sensing his reaction, Shirosaki grabs him by the hand to take him to the bench. Shirosaki does his best to make Momose feel better. Including explaining why he has kept his phone with the cracked screen. According to Shirosaki, he started seeing his phone as a mini-Momose. Moved by Shirosaki, Momose decides to confront his fear and call his ex-boss back. As expected, he immediately received verbal abuse. Shirosaki sticks up for him. The ex-boss threatens to come by Momose’s house. Shirosaki invites Momose to live with him.
THOUGHTS
I was disappointed by the lack of boyfriend content! It was literally one small interaction demonstrating that Kinjo is perhaps bi-sexual or pansexual. I thought that would be a nice topic to expound on as Kinjo and Momose try to find peace with their prior abuses. I am also happy the Momose has such a caring boss. My heart skipped when Shiosaki explained why he considered his cracked phone a mini-Momose. I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again. This is a wholesome show. It also continues to address job stress and job satisfaction which I think many of us can relate.
