Which Anime Would You Binge on Halloween?

It’s the last day of October, or as many of you know it: HALLOWEEN.

Halloween does not rank very high on my list of favorite “holidays”. Like wine and sushi, it falls on my list of things I wish I could be passionate about and just can’t. Some years I hand out candy, some years I put a few decorations out, some years I am motivated enough to carve a pumpkin. The oddest part of my indifference to Halloween is I love cosplay. You would think that I would be a Halloween fanatic, but I’m not. That being said, I do enjoy the days leading up to the big day. I love watching all of the classic horror films and enjoy the cooling weather.

It got me thinking. If I had to choose three anime series to binge on the big day, what would I watch?

HIGURASHI: WHEN THEY CRY (2020)
Third Pick

Higurashi is currently airing with the fall 2020 season. That being said, this is not the first release of Higurashi. There is an older anime show that one can binge. Because I have never seen the older version and don’t want to ruin my watch of the 2020 release, I’m choosing this show for my list because the first four episodes have been promising enough. It got a slow start, but things are starting to pick up and I can tell that this is good one to stream on the big day!

THE PROMISED NEVERLAND
Second Pick

I wouldn’t classify The Promised Neverland as a horror anime. Instead, I would classify it as a psychological thriller. What makes this anime worthy of a Halloween binge is the stress it creates by the situation the children are in. The entire show had me intrigued by the intelligence of the children and the chess match they had to engage in to survive. If you haven’t watched The Promised Neverland, you must add it to your watchlist.

SCHOOL-LIVE!
Top Pick

If you haven’t watched School-Live!, you should. My husband actually tricked me into watching this show. As you can tell from the show’s images, it looks like a wholesome slice-of-life, and in many ways, it is. Personally, I like slice-of-life anime, but they are very formulaic and I often need a break from them. At the time of the release of the show, I recall the current seasons being filled with the typical slice-of-life, so I really wasn’t interested in watching another. He had already watched the entire show and said, “I promise. You’ll like this one.”

And, boy. Did I.

This show magnificently descends into darkness and I highly recommend it. What starts as four cute girls diligently going to school and participating in their club activities turns into something much darker.
