Tak Dong-gyung – Female protagonist. Her parents die at a young age leaving her and her brother to be raised by their aunt. Diagnosed with a brain tumor and only has 3 months to live.

Doom – Male protagonist. The “god” of destruction. He brings doom to the humans in the world.

Brief Summary

Tak Dong-gyung is a young woman suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumor. She is stoic and shows very little emotion about her diagnosis. She has the worst day of her life and calls upon Doom to end the world. Fed up with his existence, Doom answers her wish and forms a contract with Tak Dong-gyung. We follow Tak Dong-gyung as she navigates her misfortune and quest to complete her contract without affecting the people she loves.

My Thoughts

This show is definitely a tearjerker. I found myself crying on more than one occasion. Tak Dong-gyung is a very likable character. She is stoic yet happy and cheerful. She loves deeply and does her best to care for those she loves. Doom becomes swoon-worthy. He begins as a dark character, but as he falls in love with Tak Dong-gyung, he becomes increasingly handsome and likable. Their relationship as star-crossed lovers pulls at the heartstrings and brings the right amount of anticipation. The supernatural element is not overdone. It is used just enough to highlight that Doom is not human. While he claims to not be a God, his powers are God-like. There is some reference to religion and the existence of God, but it is not overdone. I believe the show is balanced in that regard.

I loved this show. I originally wanted to watch only 2 episodes a week, but I ended up binging the whole thing in 2 days. There is a bonus romantic plot that includes the actor Kang Tae-oh. Some of you will recognize him as the main male protagonist in The Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The second romance plot is a nice addition to the show as it creates ties to each of the characters. I enjoyed that aspect as well. I highly recommend this show if you’re interested in a hate-to-love romance that pulls at the heartstrings.

One response to “K-Drama: Doom at Your Service”

  1. “Doom At Your Service” is very helpful for working through grief and the emotions associated with loss. As a bonus, Mister Doom is swoon worthy.
That actor, Seo In Guk, is also fabulous in “Cafe Nimandag”, a comedy and mystery.
