Episode 8: Nightmares and Ominous Shadows

Summary

The Grave: A tomb for vengeful spirits of the supernaturally gifted. Here, they turn into grotesqueries. They are sealed in this tomb to prevent their escape. This tomb has been unsealed.

Kazushi, the new head of the Tatsuishi household, Lord Kudo, and Okaito visit with the Princess. There, she gives the narrative of her vision. The unsealing of the Grave will unleash a battle and it is moving toward the imperial capital. As Kazushi, Kudo, and Okaito leave, the Princess stops Kudo. She congratulates him on his engagement but also prophesizes that he has a difficult time ahead.

Back at the Kudo household, Miyo and Hazuki continue to teach Miyo how to be a proper lady. Miyo is dressed in Western clothes and is learning how to properly move in them. In addition, they work on table manners as Miyo is not used to using a fork and knife. Miyo enjoys her lessons as she grows closer with Hazuki and reaching her goal of being a proper lady for Lord Kudo.

Kudo continues to worry about Miyo and her nightmares. He is aware of her connection to the Usuba family and knows that they possess strong powers.

During their studies, Hazuki asks if Miyo will call her “sister.” However, Miyo cannot bring herself to do so as she has terrible memories of Kaya mockingly calling Miyo “sister.” Instead, she offers to call her Hazuki without the formal honorifics. This makes Hazuki happy.

Kudo continues to use his investigator to find the Usubas. However, the investigator has no leads.

Miyo continues to have nightmares and Kudo continues to worry about her. During their practice, Hazuki notices that Miyo looks tired. She asks if Miyo is sleeping enough.

An envoy arrives at the military installation. In this envoy is Arata Tsuruki, a special advisor to the Imperial House. Arata gives him intel on the Grave. Multiple men were found collapsed near the Grave, but little else is known. During this terse conversation, Arata begins to provoke Kudo with his knowledge of Kudo’s personal life.

Later on, Kudo’s military unit proceeds to the unsealed Grave. There, they look for grotesqueries. As they survey, Kudo notices silence. Grotesqueries attack. Kudo, using his immense power, easily dispatches the grotesqueries.

Hazuki and Miyo take a trip to town to work on Miyo’s walking and posture in her Western clothing. As they’re walking, Miyo begins to get pale and faints. She believes Lord Kudo catches her, but instead, is Arata.

Thoughts

In my opinion, Arata seems to be plotting something. I don’t quite trust him. The Princess’ revelation to Kudo is also concerning. The fact that Arata was there to catch Miyo suggests to me that this guy is a creeper. The show has been alluding to Miyo possibly having powers. Does Arata somehow play a part in that? I am excited to see what kind of action fighting the grotesqueries will bring. They’re advancing on the imperial capital and it sounds like that would be a very bad thing. Will we get to see the real power of Kudo? Part of me thinks he is being set up somehow. The show is finally gaining some traction!
