Episode 9: Drowning in Dreams
Summary
As Miyo faints, she is caught by Arata. After exchanging polite greetings, Arata tells her to take care of herself. As she walks away, Arata mentions that she is special.

As Miyo rests, Kudo and his sister discuss Miyo’s dreams and the presence of spiritual magic that remains to not disturb Kudo’s barriers. They also discuss Miyo’s Usuba heritage and how that might be affecting things. Kudo wants to protect Miyo but admits to his sister that she guards her feelings.
It’s night and an innocent man is attacked by grotesqueries. At work, Kudo is apprised of the attack. The grotesqueries are moving closer to the capital. Meanwhile, Miyo’s nightmares are draining her energy. Hazuki, sensing her drained state, cuts down their lessons. Miyo is feeling lonely as Kudo works late to solve the grotesqueries issue.
Miyo cooks Hazuki and Yurie lunch. Over lunch, Hazuki tells the story of her young marriage and how she regrets how it ended. She did not get along with his family because she was young, inexperienced, and not a great homemaker. Over a fight, they decided to get divorced.

In a rare moment, Miyo and Kudo are on the porch late at night. Miyo asks about Hazuki and Kudo’s relationship. He tells her he thinks his sister is a good person. Miyo is envious of their growth together because she did not have someone to lean on. While in thought, Kudo asks her to sit closer to him. He grabs her hand and asks her to tell him how she feels. He asks her if she’s lonely to which she replies she is not. As he probes further, she admits she is lonely and he comforts her.

Miyo receives a surprise visitor. Arata stops by to see Kudo. Arata is quickly informed that even though it is his day off, KUdo was called into work. Arata then begins to verbally berate Kudo for not taking better care of Miyo. Miyo becomes defensive. As quickly as he began his character assassination, Miyo’s reaction causes him to stop. He whispers into Miyo’s ear that he has an opportunity for her.

Arata makes his way to Kudo’s workplace where he turns over command of the grotesqueries mission. When alone with Kudo, he once again begins a character assassination.
Kudo receives a call from his private investigator. The investigator found that there was only one person that could have been Miyo’s mother. Her name was Sumi Tsuruki. Immediately, Kudo makes the connection to Arata.
Kudo rushes home to find Miyo in a daze. She had cooked dinner. It is the first time he really sees the exhaustion setting in. He once again pleads with her to tell him how she feels and asks if he is really unworthy to lean on. He tells her if he knew this is how things would have turned out, he wouldn’t have agreed to her lessons. She ends up crying and collapsing. Finding Arata’s business card on Miyo, he places her in the car.
Thoughts
Where do I start? Are these two actually going to get married anytime soon? It is called My Happy Marriage and yet nothing seems remotely happy about it. I have to admit that this is going in a completely different direction. That isn’t a bad thing, but not necessarily a good thing, either. That being said, I am invested and will complete the show. I don’t totally hate it. I love the animation and I can relate to Miyo’s plight. I, too, am someone that tends to ride things out solo instead of reaching out for help. I also feel that I need to do things on my own to make life easier for my partner. Presumably, we learn that Arata is an Usuba. At least, that is the conclusion I came to. It definitely explains Arata’s creepy behavior. The next episode should be the great Usuba reveal. It will be nice to watch that part of the story unfold.
