EPISODE 5: HEART EYES!

Shirosaki invites Momose to an overnight trip to scout out a location. As Momose is packing, Shirosaki sends him the meeting time and place. In true Shirosaki fashion, he sends directions to the wrong station. He quickly corrects himself, but Momose can’t help but laugh. Worried that he will be gone overnight, Shirosaki vows to play with his cat as long as possible. However, he ends up falling asleep and his kitten curled up in his lap.

Momose is still struggling with his anxiety. As he recalls the mistreatment from his former boss, Shirosaki does his best to distract him with a story of how he mistook a stranger for their managing director. The story did help and Momose’s stomach disappeared.

Meanwhile, Kinjo and Aoyama are on a trip of their own, however, it is only a day trip and not an overnight trip. Their trip is to Kumatte Land, home of Aoyama’s beloved bear character, Kumattechan.

Back on the train, Momose and Shirosaki are having lunch. Shirosaki tells Momose that it felt like a field trip, so he made his own lunch complete with octopus sausages. Momose notices that another advertising agency is using an idol group to advertise their business. As he talks about it to Shirosaki, Shirosaki misunderstands him and thinks he applied to the idol group.

Back at Kumatte Land, the stark reality is the park is in the boondocks and built too much into nature. They have no incoming traffic. They’re hoping Aoyama and Kinjo can work some advertising magic and draw in some crowds. They realize the park has many redeeming qualities.

A storm rolls in and they get caught out in the rain. The only dry clothes they have are matching Kumatte shirts. They quickly find out that buses have been suspended due to the weather, so they’re stuck. Aoyoma calls the PR lady and she invites them to stay at the park’s lodgings. Needless to say, the lodgings are over the top.

Momose and Shirosaki arrive at the ryokan (inn). It is breathtakingly beautiful. As they tour the facilities, Momose is overly excited. He quickly realizes it and gets sad because he isn’t being professional. Shirosaki sensing this, suggests they go into the outdoor hot spring. As they exit the hot spring, Shirosaki walks passed Momose. This makes Momose fear that Shirosaki is mad at him for being hyper.

Momose calls out to Shirosaki, and in true Shirosaki fashion, he didn’t recognize Momose and thought Momose was someone different. They souvenir shop and Momose is still self-conscious about his excitability. When Shirosaki brings it up, Momose apologies. Instead of admonishing him, he thanks him. Shirosaki tells Momose that they should incorporate his excitement into the ad.

Back at Kumatte Land, Kinjo has caught a cold. When he thinks of telling Aoyama to ask for help, he also has anxiety about his abusive ex-boss. Aoyama hears a thud and rushes to aid Kinjo. When Aoyama makes a fuss, Kinjo rolls into a ball.

In the end, both trips work out well with both pairs understanding each other more.

THOUGHTS

Another cute episode. Beneath the cute exterior, there lies the story of lasting anxiety and how hard it is to overcome those hurdles. Despite Shirosaki never giving Momose a reason to fear him, Momose still fears the possibility of abuse. The same rings true for Kinjo. This show is definitely a commentary regarding how negative experiences take twice as many good ones to recover.
