Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.

Entering an online long-distance relationship. In today’s society, it is not uncommon to meet someone online that you think you have a connection with. In fact, I would say meeting someone online has grown in popularity with all the different websites and apps out there. However, 14 years ago, I think it was still a little taboo.

I was married to my first husband when I “met” Casey in 2000. We both played a game called EverQuest. We exchanged AOL instant messenger screen names and basically sent memes to each other before they were really referred to as memes. We were online buddies. I wouldn’t even say we were friends. We didn’t share any personal information. I didn’t discuss my marriage or my son. Just memes. We lost contact for MANY years.

Enter MySpace. He found me. We once again resumed our meme-sharing ways. Except, now he knew I was married and had a kid. At this point, we became friends. It was also at this point that my marriage was really falling apart. Then, my husband had an affair and my world turned into shit. Casey helped me through that. He would remind me to take care of myself and my son. He was a good friend. We continued our friendship for a good solid year before we thought maybe we should try a real relationship.

The big risk I took was not only entering an online long-distance relationship, but also flying from Texas to Kansas to meet him and his family. He could have been a serial killer, or a creeper, but I took that chance and trusted my gut.

We will be married 14 years on April 26th. I don’t regret for one minute taking that leap of faith. He’s my soulmate and it all started with a random encounter in an online video game.

  2. Oh, that’s so sweet! Yeah, sometimes meeting new people can be pretty scary, and doubly so when you only know them from online interactions, but it can also be a really rewarding experience!
