Thanksgiving.
I know it is a controversial holiday. Especially since I am 1/4 Choctaw Indian. For many Native Americans, it is a day of mourning. And, you can’t really ignore the appropriation of Native American culture. Dressing children as pilgrims. Making construction paper headdresses. Then there is the white-washing of history…
Despite knowing that, Thanksgiving is still my favorite holiday. I love waking up in the morning and putting on the parade while I cook. I enjoy sharing a large meal with my family. I enjoy having that rare Thursday and Friday off to indulge in turkey and shopping.
The holiday reminds me of my full-blooded Choctaw grandmother making the best pies for the family. My memories of her fade with time, but they’re strongest during Thanksgiving.
Many years ago, I made cute turkey placemats and napkin rings.

Have I been brainwashed? Maybe. I think of the holiday as a day/time to be thankful. I often think of all the negativity surrounding the holiday and honestly, I don’t really care. I think we’re all adults and can determine the right course of action for ourselves.
I am going to continue to celebrate Thanksgiving and enjoy the time off with family. I’m going to continue to celebrate the things that I am thankful for while acknowledging that the holiday isn’t exactly wholesome and pure. And, that’s okay with me.
