SERIES SUMMARY

Zagan is feared by the masses as an evil sorcerer. Both socially awkward and foulmouthed, he spends his days studying sorcery while beating down any trespassers within his domain. One day he’s invited to a dark auction, and what he finds there is an elven slave girl of peerless beauty, Nephy. Having fallen in love at first sight, Zagan uses up his entire fortune to purchase her, but being a poor conversationalist, he has no idea how to properly interact with her. Thus, the awkward cohabitation of a sorcerer who has no idea how to convey his love and his slave who yearns for her master but has no idea how to appeal to him begins.

EPISODE 1: FIRST LOVE IS LIKE A NASTY DISEASE THAT EVERYONE CATCHES ONCE

Deep in the Lost Woods, a man has taken residence in a deserted castle. He is a sorcerer by the name of Zagan. Outside the Lost Woods a girl screams. A man named Meyers is attacking her. As she slaps his face, the skin rips off.

The skinless man uses a knife to expose her. She deduces that he is a sorcerer. As he is about to cut up her face, Zagan arrives grabbing the man by the skull. Zagan is upset at the ruckus happening in his “front yard”. The sorcerer tries to bargain with Zagan. Instead, he crushes the man’s skull. Blood covers the the young maiden and she passes out. Casting magic, Zagan reverts things to the way they were. He hopes that the young maiden will wake up and think everything was a dream. He sees a cross and realizes that he saved a mortal enemy of all sorcerers. Someone from the Church. He casts a magic circle to teleport her out of his territory, however, something is interfering with his circle. His friend, Barbatos, appears.

Barbatos asks Zagan what he plans to do with the girl. Sacrifice? Zagan makes it clear he isn’t into sacrificial sorcery. With a tap of his foot, Zagan sends the young maiden on her way. Zagan tells Barbatos that he is going to sleep and he should come back later. However, Barbatos is not backing down. He has an important announcement. Archdemon Marchosias is dead. We learn that Archdemons are blessed with a huge amount of mana and are at the pinnacle of the sorcerer heirarchy. Babados tells Zagan that an auction is going to happen. Zagan realizes the only reason Barbatos wants him to attend is to lend Barbatos money.

At the auction, Barbatos points out all of the sorcerers with second names. We learn these second names are titles. Now that Marchosias is dead, they must pick a new Archdemon. One of the titled Archedemons points out Zagan and states that his name came up even though he doesn’t have a title. Then, the final lot appears. They unveil an elf.

Upon first look, Zagan stands up and bids his entire fortune. It’s love at first sight. He brings the elf home, but he has no idea how to communicate with her. They sit in silence. The elf breaks the silence and asks how she is going to be killed. Zagan is flabbergasted and tells the elf he has not plans on killing her. He introduces himself and she tells him her name is Nephelia, or Nephy.

Zagan is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he will be living with Nephy. He tells Nephy he is going to provide her a room to which she responds if he is asking her to pick the room where she’ll die. He stresses again that he isn’t going to kill her. He realizes that their upbringing was probably the same. She was living as a slave and he grew up living on the streets. Zagan tells Nephy he bought her because he needs her. Zagan takes Nephy to find a room in the castle. She almost falls on the stairs. Zagan catches her and tells her to be careful. He then holds her hand.

He opens hte room and there is a guillotine. Nephy bows her head and tells him to take it as he pleases. He then blows up everything in the room. She walks out onto the balcony and reaches for the moon. She decides that she wants the room because her Master prepared it for her.

THOUGHTS

What a cute anime. It’s going to be fun watching Zagan navigate his feelings for Nephy, especially since he is so socially inept. On the other hand, she also is socially inept. The miscommunications they will have will be interesting. I wonder if there is foreshadowing happening here. The titled sorcerer mentioned that Zagan came up in the conversation of replacing Marchosias. Does that mean Zagan will become the next Archdemon? I’m looking forward to the path he will choose if he has to choose between his ambitions and Nephy. Will continue to monitor.
