Do you have an anime character that you see yourself in? Perhaps, you can relate to them on numerous levels. For me, that character is: Umaru-chan!

If you haven’t watched Himouto! Umaru-Chan, you need to stop whatever it is you’re doing and do it! It’s such a cute show. It is about a girl who presents herself as an upstanding citizen and high-achieving school girl on the outside. However, all bets are off when she gets home. She sheds her outward perfect personality and exchanges it for a snack-eating, game-playing, slob!

When I was in high school, I was a straight-A student in all advanced placement classes. I was first-chair flute as well as the drumline’s drum captain. While not pretty or popular, I did have the reputation of being smart and musically talented. I used to wear pant suits to school! You could say that is similar to a school uniform LOL.

Like Umaru-chan, I had a dark secret. Well, at least a secret that could have turned the good opinions of me as a high-achiever sour. I played Dungeons & Dragons AND video games. When the weekend rolled around, you could find me at my Dungeon Master’s house playing D&D or sitting in my bean bag chair in Tweety Bird PJs slogging away at the latest Playstation release. I would be surrounded by snacks and Mountain Dew. Very similar to Umaru-chan.

What made me relate to Umaru-chan more is her love of hamsters. She has furry friends that she takes care of. I had a gerbil. He would play around my room as I gamed. I wish I had a picture of him to share. His name was Sleepy because that is all he seemed to do!

When I watched this show, I couldn’t stop giggling because I was so much like Umaru-chan. Even today, I am still a gamer at heart. I can’t eat as much potato chips or drink cola, but the memories are still intact of the days I could.
