Episode 1: Today, I Just Want To Go Home
In a world where treasure hunters are the stars, six childhood friends make a vow to travel to the capital and become the strongest hunters in the world. Fast forward to the future and a lone man walks the streets of the capital. He tells us of a clan named “First Steps” and how they are regarded very capable in the capital. On this day, First Steps are doing interviews for their clan in a local inn. While in line, he meets Rhuda Runebeck who is friendly and approaches him.
The loner introduces himself as Krai Andrey.

Rhuda is amazed at all the hunters that have gathered for the event. She doesn’t have a lot of knowledge of the capital as she has been going solo to this point. Another hunter named Greg bullies his way into their conversation to give her a quick rundown of the clan and their reputation.

He points to a table with a lone chair and educates Rhuda that it belongs to the Grieving Souls, the founder of the First Steps clan. We learn from Krai’s inner thoughts that Grieving Souls is the party of his childhood friends. Krai’s thoughts are quickly interrupted by a level 4 hunter that exclaims he is there to be the best. A hunter named Tino who appears to already be a member of First Steps wants to teach him a lesson. The get ready to brawl. Meanwhile, Krai tells Rhuda they should leave and not get mixed up in the chaos. As he is leaving, Tino senses his presence and immediately stops him.

It is here we learn Krai’s true identity as leader of the Grieving Souls and clan master of the First Steps.

Rewinding to Grieving Souls’ past, we learn that Krai didn’t excel as much as his friends. He felt like a liability, so he tried to retire from the group. One of the party members points out that they don’t have a leader, and then promptly appoints Krai as their leader.
Fast forward to the present, we meet Ark Brave, leader of one of the First Steps’ strongest parties.
We meet Tino Shade. Worshiper of Krai.

And, Gilbert. The level 4 hunter with a chip on his shoulder.

Krai decides to give one person a shot at joining Ark’s party. Since he is a bad judge of character, he leaves it up to chance. Krai takes off a relic ring from his hand and tells Gilbert if he wants a chance, he has to prove that he can win. He announces to everyone in the inn that whoever brings the relic to Ark, they will get a chance at joining Ark’s party.
The next day, Krai made the news. The Explorer’s Association summons him. Krai bites the bullet and goes to grovel. As punishment, he is handed a book of jobs that no one else wants to do. He is given the task of choosing a “chore” and completing it. He chooses a job that seems easy on its face. His plan it to pawn it off onto Ark, but Ark is gone. Instead, he tries to pawn the job off on Tino, but she runs off. He releases a magical hounding chain to track her down and bring her back.

THOUGHTS
I really, really loved this opening episode. Krai comes off as really shady, and I love that! He’s not really capable of doing things on his own, so it seems like he depends on the strength of others and his relics to become powerful. Tino is a bit annoying, but she’s also a bit of comic relief in her pursuits of Krai. What’s an anime without a little bit of unrequited love. I am looking forward to the action in this one. Since he is not gifted like his peers, I bet all of his relics take on the load. I’m interested to see what he literally pulls out of his pocket. Will continue to monitor.
