We were casually browsing books at a Barnes & Noble when this light novel grabbed my eye. It sounded absurd. Who uses the term “bean counter” anymore! I read the synopsis and I just had to have it! Per the cover:
One day, twenty-nine-year-old accountant Seiichirou Kondou is accidentally transported to another world. As compensation, the Romany Kingdom promises to take care of all his living expenses, but the workaholic Seiichirou still asks for a job. Once he’s placed in a the Royal Accounting Department, he starts whipping his lackadaisical colleagues into shape. But when he gets in over his head and nearly dies from overwork, the handsome Commander Aresh steps in to save him and the two develop a unique physical relationship…as a form of medical treatment?!
THOUGHTS
I was completely right to pick up this light novel! It was everything I was craving at the time.
Kondou is a hot mess. He comes from modern-day Japan where he was taken advantage of and worked to the bone. However, when he is isekai’d to the foreign world, he can’t bear to not work which is weird. If a foreign kingdom offered me an all-expenses-paid lifestyle, I would totally accept and live my days as a bum. However, that is not the way of Kondou. As hinted in the title, the Royal Accounting department was subpar and Kondou simply could not take it. Taking the reigns, he manages to make positive traction in cleaning up the Romany Kingdom’s books. While overworking, Kondou is introduced to magical potions that restore his strength. Unfortunately, the potions were poisoning him because he has no tolerance for the magic of the new world he was in. Collapsing, Commander Aresh finds Kondou and nurses him back to health. It’s the manner of treatment that is spicy! Moving forward, the two are inseparable as Commander Aresh monitors the foods he eats and makes sure his magic exposure is limited so he doesn’t get magic sickness.
I am a sucker for isekai. Probably one of my favorite genres. This definitely scratches that itch. If you like the knight in shining armor trope, you’ll most definitely enjoy Bean Counter.
