I had to think really hard about this one. My mother was not the world’s greatest cook, so my comfort food definitely did not come from my childhood before my parent divorced when I was seven. My childhood before middle school was highly traumatic so it didn’t come from that time period.

Sitting here thinking about it, it isn’t ONE food. It isn’t even a group of foods. It’s a holiday. It’s my favorite holiday that revolves around food. It’s Thanksgiving. It’s the food of Thanksgiving that’s my comfort food.

I mentioned that my childhood was traumatic. Around sixth grade, I made the decision to move to Grand Prairie, Texas with my dad. My life drastically changed. I went from no family to all of a sudden being around aunts, uncles, my grandmother, and cousins. That also meant celebrating Thanksgiving with all of those family members where I didn’t celebrate at all when I lived with my mother.

They always prepared the whole spread. Fried turkeys, ham, all the various sides, dinner rolls, dressing, fruit salad, pies…enough food to feed an army. Dallas Cowboys on the television. It was all new to me, but it quickly become tradition.

The ultimate comfort food I suppose became my Aunt Susie’s mashed potatoes. She always made me my own container to take home. No one was to touch it and everyone knew. I got my own container of it.

What about you? What is your favorite comfort food?
