What exactly is an anime training arc?

It’s that period of the series where the main character trains to become stronger or more skilled to face the challenges ahead. It doesn’t necessarily mean a traditional physical battle. It could mean competing at music festival, sports competition, food competition, or any kind of competition that requires training or meeting a goal. A training arc relays the idea that hard work is needed on top of talent and growth is often uncomfortable.

So, what is an anime training arc that we all experience in real life?

DATING

That’s right. Dating. It’s a period of training for that thing we call marriage, or co-habitating, or whatever term you want to call it.

Communication. It’s a time where you train your communication skills. Either you learn to compromise with each other, or your relationship perishes.

Commitment. Can you stay committed to each other? Dating definitely tests those waters. If you can’t keep your eyes from wandering while dating, you sure as hell won’t be able to keep them from wandering when married.

Emotional Connection. Can you keep an emotional connection? Do you have what it takes to maintain an emotional connection with each other. Can you maintain that equilibrium?

Physical Connection. Do you have a physical connection? Your relationship might not last long without one.

Hobbies. It’s good to have your own hobbies, but what about mutual interests? Do you have anything in common? What kind of mutual interests do you have to build that companionship?

Domestic Compatibility. Do you have what it takes to live together? This is a big one. Do you completely drive each other insane?

What is an anime training arc you feel we all experience in real life?

  1. Not Suitable For Work language/conversations. I think everyone has been there. Fresh out of school, used to chatting with friends where everyone in your world are teachers or peers, and then you go into the working world and all of a suddenly you have your boss talking to you about how some conversations are not appropriate for work. It doesn’t have to be X rated, it can be a silly story about how you messed up at work, it could be a gross thing your friend did, it could be a lot of things, but everyone has to learn that there is chatting with friends and then there is talking around where clients/customers can hear you, and the two conversations are not the same. I remember the first library I worked at when I got out of university had a sign in the back work room that said, “Keep it professional please!” to remind the staff that patrons could hear them back there.

    1. Ah yes, good one! We all have to learn that lesson for sure.
