Not a trope from books or movies, but from anime.
the Student Council.
Anime overuses the plot device of the student council. Whether it be for romance, or power, or competition…it is SO annoying. I almost always get annoyed whenever a series leans too much into the student council plot device.
I am not sure why it annoys me. Maybe because the student council is not that important or powerful here in the States so it seems farfetched and silly. At least when I was in school, the student council was just something to look good on your school achievement record. It wasn’t actually useful.
In anime, the student council president is always an all-powerful student who commands authority and respect. Students part the halls for them to pass. They whisper as their entourage passes by. Yeah, right. When I was in school, I bet you could do a survey and 90% of the class didn’t even know who their student council president was or that their school even had a student council.
So, yes. I have a personal annoyance at the student council plot device. Get rid of it. The world would be a better place without it.
