Self-Awareness: The ability to understand not only who you are, but why you are the way that you are.
I’d like to think that I am a very self-aware person. I believe I have the ability to recognize, understand, and evaluate myself. I believe I can acknowledge my flaws, my triggers, and accept responsibility for my actions without making excuses for them. I understand healthy boundaries. Yet, despite the ability to do these things, it doesn’t make me any less of a hot, freakin’ mess.
I recognize that I am an overthinker. I do this with my best friend all the time. I overthink our conversations. I can’t help it. It almost always ends up in a misunderstanding of some sort.
I recognize that I can be dramatic. It doesn’t stop me from being dramatic.
I recognize answering that text message is a bad idea. And yet, here I am, typing the response anyhow.
I recognize that I push myself too hard. It doesn’t stop myself from doing it every. single. time.
I recognize I am drawn to people that emotionally hurt me. Any yet, I stick around when I do find them.
I consider myself emotionally intelligent. And yet, at the same time, emotionally stupid.
I understand when I am being irrational. And yet, I can’t stop myself from being irrational.
I’m the therapist, and the problematic patient. I can give myself the best advice with no intention of actually following it.
I’m aware that I withdraw as a protective mechanism. And, yet. I do it anyhow.
I’m a hot mess despite being self-aware. What about you?
