My dad was an avid reader. One day, he handed me The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. He told me it was an “important” read. That it would be relevant one day. This was in 1994. I was 14.
The book follows true stories of the Ebola and Marburg viruses. Long story short, the book tells the tale of how quickly the two viruses claimed their victims. How hopeless the situations were. How screwed we would be if the viruses were to spread. Pandemics. It’s the cautionary tale that humanity is not untouchable and that nature will prevail in the end.
It truly scared me, because it became not of a question of what. It became a question of when. December 2019 was the first case of COVID-19. By March, 100,000 cases. By April, 1 million cases. By September, 1 million deaths.
It became relevant and still one of the scariest things I ever read.
