Hi, friends!

I recently started watching A Girl and Her Guard Dog. Apparently, this anime is clouded in controversy.

Summary

Isaku just wants to live a normal life. But as the granddaughter of a yakuza boss, that’s a pretty tall order. For years, it’s been difficult for Isaku to make friends and find love. So, she decides to enroll in a high school far from her hometown in hopes of a fresh start. But her plans take an unexpected turn when a worried member of the yakuza, Keiya, enrolls in the same school to protect her.

Crunchyroll

In summary, it sounds like an innocent anime. The girl wants an ordinary life away from the yakuza. The yakuza follows her to school to make sure she’s safe. However, two episodes in, it is a far cry from the summary provided. What it fails to disclose is that her parents died leaving her to her yakuza grandfather. Her grandfather appoints young Keiya to raise her. He is roughly 10 years older than Isaku. What the summary also fails to point out is that Isaku is in love with Keiya and is desperately trying to fall out of love with him.

Enter the controversy.

Reading comments about this anime, many think the anime is supportive of “grooming” and that Keiya is a pedophile.

Am I wrong not to feel that way? If we look at the history of Japan, the age of consent used to be 13 years old. Legally, at the time the manga was written, the age of consent was 13 years old. I think it is natural for feelings to develop for those around us. I guess it weirds some people out that Keiya raised her since she was a little girl. And, while I can definitely see that point, it doesn’t weird me out. It is a fantasy world. Anime is fantasy. I don’t see why we have to label real constructs to unreal situations.

How do you feel? Would you feel too creeped out to watch this romantic comedy?
