EPISODE 9: AR

Leon and Sasumata are having a conversation. Sasumata tells Leon that the Black Bird is being weakened. Leon is visibly angry. He tells Sasumata not to worry. He is going to do his best to make sure the world stays free.

Back in the lab, Asuma wakes up with Taichiro by his side. They are both distraught realizing that they both thought they would never see the other again.

Taichiro tells Asuma that it was their dad’s co-worker that saved him. It is explained that she created an AI that mirrored Ichi exactly. Ichi would die to save Asuma. Kamuro explains that their dad was the one who discovered killing the AI cores would weaken the Black Bird. This angers Taichiro. He explains that his father expected perfection from everyone. He wanted the perfect children. He tells Kamuro it was suffocating being his child. Asuma then tells Taichiro that is why Taichiro loved Shiro. Shiro was the opposite of their dad in real life.

Kojiro finally realizes that Asuma is in the hospital. He rushes to the hospital only to discover that he has been discharged. Kojiro is obviously relieved to learn that his son is still alive.

Back at the Arima house, Taichiro explains to Kamuro why he hates his dad so much. He explains that Asuma had a twin sister named Aya. She was slow at things and irritated her father because she wasn’t perfect. One day, she forgot her communication notebook. At 10:00 p.m., her father made her walk back to school to get it. Only, she never returned. His father never took responsibility for it either.

Back in Planet, Leon appears at the Granada board meeting and discloses that Sasumata is an AI.

He retells the story of how they met. He taught Sasumata how to speak. Leon discloses that Sasumata is self-aware. He also discloses the names of other AIs. However, his board of directors is more concerned about how it affects Granada. Leon is passionate about his cause. He wants to redefine what it is to be human. Black Bird feathers start to fall. Leon sacrifices the Board to the Black Bird.

The whole of Planet begins to see black feathers fall from the sky.

Back at the house, Kojiro arrives. He scolds Kamuro for going to his house. It is then he is told that Asuma had been infected by the Black Bird. Wanting to run brain scans, he instructs Kamuro to drive to the lab. However, Taichiro goes on a rampage snatching the wig off of his father. Taichiro scolds his father telling him that his ideas are getting people killed. His father refers to Aya and tells him to get over it. Just as Taichiro is about to throw a punch, Asuma does so first.

Deep in argument, Taichiro decides that he is at his limit. He tells his father that he’s leaving the house and begins to run. His father begins to run after him. Mid-run, something slices the legs off of Taichiro’s father. Meanwhile, the two worlds appear to merge.

THOUGHTS

Wow. I had my suspicions that Leon’s companion was an AI. How else would they have known how to summon the Black Bird. I think what is most interesting is the show’s view on the impact gaming has on its players. Some would rather live in a virtual world than in the real world. I think that concept already exists. How is more advanced AI going to affect that? I believe that the entire family is infected now that I know more about the Black Bird. They “fought” it and they might have been in the Birdcage for a while now.
