Today’s writing prompt was about religion and I have a strict rule on this blog. No political ranting, ravings, or opinions. This is a safe space from such a polarizing topic.

So, instead, I write about one of the world’s lesser known expensive hobbies.

Collecting manga 📚

This is a new hobby of mine. I’ve recently acquired the taste of reading manga. However, the “collecting” part makes me cry. Like, literally cry. There is so much manga that I want to own, so little space to put it, and a wallet that cries like a hungry toddler when I realize each book is roughly $10-15 USD. It is not uncommon for a series to have 10 or more books. Yeah, it hurts.

So, what’s the plan? Right now, I renewed my library card. I haven’t been to the public library in over a decade. Our local library has a decent size collection. Enough to perhaps keep me busy for a few months.

Currently, I am reading:

  • Hirano and Kagiura
  • My Love Mix-Up
  • Waiting for Spring

My other plan to help alleviate the hit to the wallet AND the space issue is buying manga on my Kindle. I can stomach $6-8 USD per digital copy. So far, I don’t mind it. It isn’t as nice as having the physical copy, but I don’t really have the available room. My dream is to have a manga library someday. But, for now, Kindle when I can.

I do plan on sharing posts on My Love Mix-Up so look forward to that content.

Do you have a hobby that hits the pocket book hard?

  1. Same! I’ve taken to trawling eBay and Facebook Marketplace looking for people reselling. I’ve got some pretty good deals, but then I find a rare out of print series and I panic that I’ll never see it available at that price again and next thing I know I’ve bought it. To hell with having enough bookshelves to house them all. Someone needs to take away my credit card!!!

  2. I feel ya. That also keeps me from being into manga 😕 I read whatever I can find on Kindle Unlimited (I always ask for KU for Christmas 😁) and I own a few copies. I sometimes buy from eBay but it’s not that much cheaper. Sigh. My expensive hobby is kawaii fashion and I try not to buy too much.

  3. I love Manga, and I started a small collection years ago, but had to stop for that exact reason….my finances were taking a hit. The library is a good idea though, I never thought to even go there for manga. I suppose I always thought it was niche, so I’d have to collect

  4. Haha, too true. When I moved recently I also realised how much space is taken up by collecting books and manga, but I kinda love the homely stacked-books aesthetic.

I will attempt not to think too much about the amount of money they combine too, haha.
