Episode 8.

F/ACE is on their way to film their training camp. Tamon is in top form. On the bus, we meet the director of the training camp recording. He mentions that he is especially focused on Tamon. Kinoshita overhears and worries about Tamon and whether he can stay Hottiehara for the whole camp.

First part of the day, F/ACE battles each other in beach volleyball. Kinoshita struggles to keep it together.

The director yells cut and the volleyball flies toward Kinoshita. She catches the ball and Tamon immediately comes over to ask if she is okay. She does her best to not react to the hot Tamon standing in front of her. She hands over the volleyball, but not before she gets a death look from Keito. Meanwhile, Ouri is jealous that Kinoshita is only fawning over Tamon. He admits to himself that he wants someone to have feelings for him. It takes him by surprise.

After recording their volleyball match, the director gives them all a break. Tamon’s manager asks her to check up on the guys. She knocks on their door with some snacks just to be greeted by an annoyed Keito. As expected, Keito, Tamon, and Ouri have reverted to their true selves. Tamon is having a nervous breakdown. Kinoshita brings out one of her homemade fans.

Hottiehara makes an appearance and all three revert back to their stage presence. It’s time to film the BBQ sequence of the training camp. Filming of day one is a success. As their packing up, Kinoshita volunteers to take some equipment to the shed behind the building. Ouri is watching Kinoshita and then realizes that she is blushing while looking at Tamon.

It’s bath time. Kinoshita finished her bath and is now dressed in a robe. Her phone rings. It’s Ouri. She left her fan in his room. He orders her to come get it. She arrives and he immediately blushes. He hands over the fan and Kinoshita apologizes. She mentions she has more than one.

Interrupting them, Keito knocks on the door making sure Kinoshita hasn’t crawled in one of their beds. Keito opens the door to Ouri in his futon covered up to his face. Keito is comforted that Ouri is alone and leaves. Ouri flings the blankets off to expose Kinoshita wrapped in his arms. He tells her that it was to avoid the trouble with Keito if he found them together. In a moment of weakness, he pats Kinoshita’s head while asking why it has to be Tamon and not Ouri.

When she admits her feelings for Tamon runs deep, she offers to read him some of her sutras for Tamon. Irritated, he kicks her out of his room. On her way back to her room, she runs into Gloomyhara, except the scare each other. His face is wrapped like a mummy and he admits he doesn’t like bathing with other people. Kinoshita mentions that Ouri called her to their room to get the fan. The dark Tamon leaks out.

It’s the next day and filming resumes. Kinoshita is working hard. No matter what she does, Keito is watching her. That night, it’s the test of courage. Kinoshita volunteers to check on the speakers in the shed. As she runs off, Tamon looks concerned. Kinoshita enters the shed, but can’t find speakers. The door closes and locks her in. They’re about to start filming and they realize Kinoshita hasn’t return. Panicked, Tamon runs off to find her.

Tamon walks into the shed forgetting about the door and now both of them are trapped. Gloomyhara is in panic mode. Kinoshita does her best to cheer Gloomyhara up. Meanwhile, Gloomyhara is concerned about Kinoshita. He realizes how much work she put into make all of her signs. He admits to Kinoshita:

They’re found and immediately apologize to the director for slowing down the shoot. However, the director apologize back admitting it was his doing. He wanted footage of Tamon being surprised. Tamon immediately approaches the director and tells him he doesn’t need to do that. The group is doing their absolute best. They finished shooting for the night.

The next day, Kinoshita is preparing food. Keito shows up and starts giving her advice about Tamon disliking carrots. He also tells her Tamon is a klutz so she needs to make sure the knives are sharp so they cut effortlessly. Kinoshita and Keito have a heart to heart about Tamon. She realizes Keito really likes Tamon and that his praise is always sincere. To which he replies:

It’s the end of the training camp and Kinoshita is walking on the beach. She spies a Gloomyhara. She approaches him and he admits that he felt bad that she might not have been able to experience anything “summery”, so he was taking pictures for her. They were building a sand castle together. There, he tells Kinoshita that he has gotten to known Keito better and wants to do his best to support him. Then, out of nowhere, a wave his Kinoshita.

Tamon takes off his shirt and starts to dry her hair. He’s worried she is going to catch a cold. She mentions that she slept like a rock so she’s fine. Gloomyhara gets right up in her face and mentions her complexion looks a lot better. Ouri happens to be walking on the beach and suddenly drops his drink. He may have gotten the wrong idea.

THOUGHTS.

Ah, the quintessential training camp. I actually liked this episode. I could have done without the “housekeeper” comment she makes about herself again. That really bothers me. I don’t know why. It didn’t ruin the whole show for me though.

It’s nice to see Tamon actually working. Sure, Gloomyhara comes out here and there, but he really does seem to be growing.

I don’t know how I feel about Ouri. Is it wrong for me to want to see Kinoshita with Ouri? That would be a sudden turn of events. When I think about how much Kinoshita worships Tamon, a real relationship with each other doesn’t seem possible. She is tenacious in keeping Tamon at arm’s length and convinced that he shouldn’t be tied down by one person.

  1. The pilgrimage day setup is such a clever way to trap two characters together and force a moment of connection. It’s the kind of plot device that feels earned rather than forced when the writing is this deliberate. Kinoshita bailing last minute just enough to pivot the whole energy of the episode in an interesting direction. Really enjoying the pacing of this show, each episode feels like a little snack that leaves you wanting more.

  2. Yeah, a part of me is rooting for Ouri.
