Another profound prompt from a friend. I am going to struggle a bit with this one, so be kind!

Existing. The act of existing is the act of being authentic to one’s self. This encompasses one’s thoughts, needs, emotions, and ultimately, their identity. It’s the internal identity of one’s self. Existing is the ability to live within one’s self without the interference of others. Not necessarily to be a lone wolf in the world, but the act of just being and being content with one’s self.

Performing. Performing is the act of putting on a mask and being a puppet or dancing monkey. Performing is exactly as it sounds. Bending yourself to fit a certain mold. Adapting for survival. Adapting for acceptance. Adapting different identities for the different roles you play on a daily basis. Performing is being an actor and hoping no one calls you out on your bullshit.

Disconnect is defined as the act of separating, detaching, or terminating a link between two or more things.

Where does the disconnect happen? I honestly don’t know. I would think it happens when your external performances become stronger and overshadow your internal existence.

Social media feeds that disconnect. We need instant gratification. We need to post or advertise our performance. We thrive on that approval and acceptance of our actions.

I think many people have lost touch with their internal existence. We’ve become zombies to the pressures of putting on the mask every day. Instead, we wander feeling detached, numb, and seeking validation rather than centered and comfortable in one’s own skin.

What do you think?
