Daily writing prompt
What’s the best advice you’d give to someone younger than you?

The best advice I wish someone would have given me when I was younger that I would definitely pass on to someone younger than me now is:

BE PATIENT.

It is such a simple piece of advice and yet we all turn our backs on it. I feel like it applies to all areas of life, all walks of all, all difficulties and obstacles of life.

I wish someone told me to be patient before enlisting into the Army. I was so ready to grow up. Little did I know the cost of growing up so fast. I wish someone would have told me to be patient before my first marriage. I believe I would have taken a better path. I wish someone would have told me to be a more patient parent. I wish someone would have told me to be a more patient partner. There are so many situations during my walk in life someone could have given my younger self that piece of advice. Maybe I wouldn’t have taken it, but I needed to hear it.

So — be patient, young one. With yourself. With others. Be patient.

  1. Hmm, that’s a really interesting writing prompt and I can think of so many answers to it. I think the most important thing for younger people to keep in mind, and that I wish someone had told me when I was younger is: Don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t be afraid to go somewhere far from your familiar places. Don’t be afraid of new experiences, people, or ideas. The world isn’t nearly as scary as people often believe. And even if things go wrong, you can always try again. Starting over at square one isn’t the end of the world, and you will actually do that many times during your life. Everyone does. So try, and don’t be afraid to fail. Because even if you fail, at least you would have learned something.
Lol, this reminds me of a T shirt my grandma gave me when I was a teen. It had bluebirds (for some reason nearly everything she gave me was bluebird themed) and it said something like: “Laugh like no one can hear you, dance like no one can see you, and love like it’s the last day of your life!”. I think those are great words to live by.

    1. That’s a good school of thought, too. I was definitely a “don’t be afraid” kind of kid. I was ready to get married at a young age. Ready to have kids. Ready to have a career. I was married, owned a house, had a career in the army, and had a kid all before the age of 20. It isn’t that I regret it and I DID have to start all over in my 30s. But, I do wish someone told me to slow my roll and just be patient. I could have saved myself some time and invested my time more wisely, you know? Definitely two very different schools of thought for sure!
