My favorite song of all time is “All I Ask of You” from the musical Phantom of the Opera. There isn’t any kind of deep dive needed for the lyrics. It’s pretty straightforward.
This song belonged to me and Aleksei. (For those of you new to this site, Aleksei was my former fiancé who was killed by a drunk driver on my 17th birthday.) There are many parallels between this song and our lives.
Without going into details, I had childhood traumas before meeting Aleksei that caused nightmares and general anxiety. He always comforted me with this song.
What do I think this song says about me? How about I go one step further and say I KNOW what this song says about me. I know it says that I had dark secrets and trauma that kept me hidden in the dark. I know that I met someone that was my light. Someone that promised to be my shelter from the dark. I know this song says I met the love of my life.
It’s a great song. It was our song. It still breaks my heart to hear it, but I try to listen it to it at least once a day to remember him.
No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I’m here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears
I’m here with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide youSay you love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summertime
Say you need me with you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true
That’s all I ask of youLet me be your shelter
Let me be your light
You’re safe, no one will find you
Your fears are far behind youAll I want is freedom
A world with no more night
And you always beside me
To hold me and to hide meThen say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime
Let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you here beside you
Anywhere you go, let me go too
That’s all I ask of youSay you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime
Say the word and I will follow you
Share each day with me, each night, each morning
Say you love me, you know I do
Love me, that’s all I ask of youAnywhere you go, let me go too
Love me, that’s all I ask of you
