Summary

Episode two begins in the past when red-faced smallpox ravages the land. The current shogun of the time, Lord Iemitsu, passes away from red-faced smallpox. His nurse Lady Kasuga is distraught.

Six years pass and a beautiful Abbot is making his way to Edo castle to pay his respects to the shogun, Lord Iemitsu. When he arrives, Lady Kasuga is overwhelmed by his beauty. She decides that she is going to force the Abbot, Arikoto, to renounce his vows to become a part of the Ooku.

She tempts him with courtesans, but when that doesn’t work, she kills one of his monk companions and one of the courtesans. The episode ends with Arikoto bowing his head in what seems like defeat.

Thoughts

This was a powerful episode. The episode demonstrated the strength and power of the shogunate. Lady Kasuga wielded her power over the samurai to dispatch the monk companion and the courtesan without hesitation. The brutality is in line with what we know of the shogunate period. The episode also demonstrated helplessness. The Abbot was helpless to save himself and his two companions. I am interested to find out exactly why Lady Kasuga would go to such extreme lengths to secure the Abbot.
