Episode 5

The episode begins with Arikoto confronting Gyokuei regarding the murder of the honorable cat. Gyokuei confesses and it is reinforced that they are trapped in their own hell.

Iemitsu is reeling from the scolding she received from Arikoto. As she cries to Kasuga, Kasuga offers to have Arikoto killed. Instead, Iemitsu punishes all the grooms by forcing them to present themselves as women and dance for her.

In a flashback, we are taken to the moment when Iemitsu, originally named Chie, is taken from her mother. Samurai storm the house and kill the mother and servant, leaving Chie before Kasuga. Kasuga then cuts Chie’s hair and begins her transformation as a girl living as a boy. When she is older, in defiance, Chie leaves the protected part of the estate. She comes across a man that promptly rapes her. Kasuga finds Chie bleeding over the dead body of her abuser.

Later, she finds out she is pregnant and gives birth to a daughter. When she tries to breastfeed, the baby won’t latch and they discover the baby has died.

Coming out of the flashback, Arikoto presents himself as a woman to Iemitsu. Everyone is taken aback by his beauty. Angrily, Iemitsu orders everyone to leave. At this moment, Arikoto realizes that he is never fated to save the masses but rather to save the one soul in front of him. One year later, they’re in love but have yet to produce a child. Kasuga is growing impatient.

Thoughts

This was a bittersweet episode. However, I am curious whether they’re going to address how Chie/Iemitsu’s baby died. Since it was a girl, did Kasuga have it murdered? I wouldn’t put it passed her. She is, after all, the master schemer. This baby was unexpected and the result of a rape and, therefore, not part of Kasuga’s plan. This episode reinforced Arikoto’s character as a man willing to save others at any length. Seeing the pain that living as a man was causing Chie/Iemitsu, he committed himself to love her. His love is ebbing away at her harsh exterior. However, they have not produced a child. Is the man she loves unable to produce children? Kasuga is growing impatient, so I am curious to find out what scheme she has planned.
