What kind of love do you find easiest to give but hardest to receive?
According to Greek philosophy, there are seven different kinds of love.
- Eros: Romantic, passionate love.
- Philia: Affectionate, friendly love.
- Storge: Unconditional, familial love.
- Agape: Selfless, universal love.
- Ludus: Playful, flirtatious love.
- Pragma: Committed, long-lasting love.
- Philautia: Self love
For me, love in general is hard to give or receive. I choose those I love very carefully. I can count on two hands the number of people I’ve said “I love you” to.
If I had to choose a type of love that is the easiest for me to express, it would be philia. It is often characterized by loyalty and trust. It is the kind of love that encourages, is affectionate, and often the basis of a true friendship. When I choose to love someone, I have a great deal of loyalty to them. I would walk over the hot coals for them. I also have a great deal of trust in them. I share my deepest, darkest secrets and feelings. That being said, it comes at a high cost. I tend to get super attached and emotional when it comes to that person. I tend to enter this state of love that is confusing to me. Do I fall in love with them? I think I do. I also believe you can be in love with more than just one person.
That being said, it is hard for me to receive philia. I think that has to do with low self-confidence. I often feel I am unworthy of someone’s encouragement and affections. On the other hand, I crave philia-based relationships.
